After the successful merge of Ethereum, it is all set to introduce various new functionalities to improve the blockchain efficiency and usability. These functionalities include the Shanghai Upgrade to allow withdrawal of eth, danksharding and many more which are not yet announced. These upgrades will help ethereum evolve while keeping the <a href="https://twitter.com/_BuildBear/status/1615621158896021506">Scalability Trilemma</a> in mind. Lets discuss these upgrades in detail one by one.<h1 style="margin-left:0px;">Shanghai Upgrade</h1>Since the merge, ethereum has moved from a ‘proof of work’ mechanism to a ‘proof of stake’ mechanism. Which means users have to stake 32 eth to be able to get the Validator Software, and get rewards by maintaining the blockchain. A validator is responsible for storing data, processing transactions and adding blocks to a blockchain.Currently once you have staked 32 ETH, you cannot withdraw it. This is definitely going to change after the Shanghai upgrade is launched. Shanghai Upgrade is expected to be launched in March 2023, but it is still not confirmed. The Shanghai upgrade will put EIP 4895 into practice. For the first time since December 2020, this permits withdrawals from the consensus layer.EIP 4895 is a proposal that would add a new transaction processing method termed “Optimistic Rollup” in an effort to increase the Ethereum network’s scalability. Optimistic Rollup is a layer 2 scaling technique that preserves the security guarantees of the primary Ethereum blockchain while enabling the execution of smart contracts and the transfer of assets off-chain.<h1 style="margin-left:0px;">Danksharding and EIP 4844</h1>First lets start with understanding sharding.What is sharding?Sharding enables multiple transactions to be executed simultaneously rather than sequentially, which increases the scalability of a blockchain network. To achieve this, the blockchain is split into numerous “shard chains,” each of which has its own set of validators and state.Now that we understand sharding lets answer the next question.What is danksharding?Danksharding is a type of layer 2 scaling solution that keeps the security guarantees of the primary Ethereum blockchain while enabling the execution of smart contracts and the movement of assets off-chain. To do this, the Ethereum blockchain is split into various “shard chains” and the transactions from each shard are then combined into a “rollup.” Following verification, the rollup is committed back to the main Ethereum network. Reduced network congestion, higher throughput, and cheaper transaction costs are all made possible by this.What is EIP 4844 and how is it going to be used??Proto-danksharding, also known as EIP 4844, is an upcoming modification to the Ethereum protocol that would add temporary data storage. It will be less expensive to use than on-chain storage because the data does not have to be kept on the network indefinitely. Rollups can post transaction information or proofs back to Layer 1 using this storage. The advantages include decreased L2 transaction fees, more scalability, and increased accessibility for more individuals!<h1 style="margin-left:0px;">KZG Commitments</h1>A new cryptographic system is needed for proto-danksharding: KZG Commitments. This ceremony, which is also referred to as a “Trusted Setup,” will provide the structured reference string (SRS) required for the commitments to function. As long as one participant in the ceremony is successful in keeping their identity a secret, an SRS is secure.This multi-party ceremony involves each participant creating a secret and using a computation to combine it with earlier contributions. The output is then shared with the public and given to the next contributor. Participants must have a verified Ethereum address or GitHub account to take part in order to prevent efforts to tamper with the ceremony. The Ceremony’s final product will be incorporated into an upcoming upgrade to assist the Ethereum network grow.Ethereum has a vision to solve the Scalability Trilemma by launching more such upgrades. All the upgrades will not only improve the entire blockchain efficiency but will also reduce the energy usage and protect the nature.We will continue to be researching more and talking more on the KZG in the coming months too.
